Welcome to Year 1!
I hope you have had a great summer and are ready to start the new school year.
If you have any questions or queries please feel free to pop in and ask so Year 1 can continue to be a friendly and fun environment for your child to work in.
Your child will receive spellings every Thursday and will be tested the following week.
They will receive a set of words according to their phonic ability. To help your child learn these words, help them to use the LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE and CHECK technique:
To learn to spell a word…
- LOOK at the word shape.
- SAY the word to yourself.
- COVER the word.
- WRITE the word.
- CHECK your spelling.
Repeat LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE and CHECK until you remember the new word.
Your child will receive homework every other Friday focusing on the work we have been learning in class.
They can choose from a selection of tasks to make the learning more fun and personalised for themselves. If they want they can try and complete all the sections, just make sure they return their homework books in time!!!
Your child will always go home with a reading book. It would be fantastic if you could read with your child at home little and often (about 5 minutes a night would be great). Questioning them about their book will also test their understanding of what they have just read.
Reading will take place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday with your child reading to the class teacher or teaching assistant.
