Welcome to Year 5!
We hope you are looking forward to a fun-filled year. Here is some basic information to get you started.
Mrs Nicholls is your Class Teacher and Mrs Jones teaches in Year 5 for two afternoons a week. Mrs Norman-Ball is Year Five's Teaching Assistant.
P.E days are currently on a Monday and Thursday, but please do have your P.E kit in school every day as sometimes these days may change or we may have additional P.E sessions.
Homework is set on a Monday and you will have nearly two weeks to complete it. It will be due in on the following Thursday.
Spellings are set weekly, on a Friday and tested the following week.
Tables are tested weekly, on a Monday, through Big Maths Beat That. It is essential that you practise your tables regularly. By Year 5 the National Curriculum states that you should know all of these up to 12x12, so if you are still learning them make sure you practise daily. You will also take home your weekly Big Maths Beat That CLIC and SAFE challenges. Please spend some time looking at these and going over questions that you are unsure of. Doing this will really develop your maths reasoning skills and confidence.
You should be reading every day (if possible) and at the very minimum, four times a week. Research into learning shows that the more that you develop your comprehension skills and understanding of vocabulary the better you will do in school across the whole of the curriculum, so please do give reading the priority it needs and make sure you keep a list of, and look up, any tricky words you come across- there is a space in your reading diary to make a list of these.
Finally, please do come and talk to any of the Year Five staff if there is anything at all that you need explaining. For children there is a box in the classroom where questions can be posted if they are a little nervous about speaking to an adult. Parents/carers should ring, email or make an appointment through the school office and we will get back to you as soon as we possibly can.
