Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education
Rationale- What has informed our curriculum design in PSHCE?
PSHE enables pupils to develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk management, team working and critical thinking in the context of health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world (including economic wellbeing and aspects of careers education). PSHE education is a curriculum area through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain. A well implemented PSHE curriculum has an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils. It is a curriculum area through which our children develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help children to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. PSHE education helps children to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life enabling them to, in line with our school moto, believe, achieve, succeed.
Intent
At Pomphlett Primary School, our PSHE curriculum aims to develop confident, emotionally literate and socially responsible children who embody our values of Honesty, Enjoyment, Achievement, Respect and Teamwork. We want every child to understand themselves, value others and make informed, safe and positive choices as they grow.
We follow the Jigsaw 3–11 programme, a comprehensive and progressive scheme that integrates Personal, Social, Health and Economic education with emotional wellbeing, mental health, and statutory Relationships and Health Education. Through this curriculum, we aim to:
Promote Honesty, helping pupils develop self‑awareness, integrity and responsible decision‑making
Foster Enjoyment, ensuring PSHE is engaging, meaningful and supportive of positive attitudes to learning and life
Support Achievement, building the emotional literacy, resilience and confidence needed to succeed
Embed Respect, celebrating diversity, promoting inclusion and nurturing positive relationships
Strengthen Teamwork, encouraging collaboration, communication and a strong sense of community
Our intent is that every child leaves Pomphlett Primary with the personal development, character and social understanding needed to thrive in modern Britain.
Implementation
PSHE is taught weekly across the school using the Jigsaw 3–11 scheme, structured into six half‑term units (Puzzles): Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me. These units build progressively from Early Years to Year 6.
Our implementation reflects our values and promotes expectations for Behaviour and Attitudes and Personal Development through:
A consistent whole‑school approach: All classes follow the same Puzzle at the same time, creating shared language and expectations that reinforce positive behaviour and respectful relationships.
Mindfulness and emotional literacy: Each lesson includes mindfulness practice, helping pupils develop self‑control, focus and strategies for managing emotions.
Engaging, enjoyable learning: Lessons are interactive, discussion‑based and designed to build confidence and enjoyment in learning about themselves and others.
Clear progression: Concepts are revisited and deepened each year, ensuring secure understanding and age‑appropriate challenge.
Inclusive and representative content: Lessons reflect diverse families, cultures and identities, promoting respect and belonging.
Safeguarding woven throughout: Topics such as healthy relationships, consent, online safety, mental health and personal safety are taught explicitly and sensitively.
Adaptation for our community: Teachers tailor lessons to reflect the needs and experiences of Pomphlett pupils, ensuring relevance and accessibility for all.
Partnership with parents: Curriculum information, statutory content and RSE materials are shared openly, with opportunities for consultation and discussion.
Through this structured and values‑driven approach, PSHE becomes a central part of our school culture and daily practice.
Impact
The impact of our PSHE curriculum is reflected in the positive behaviour, attitudes and personal development of our pupils. By the time they leave Pomphlett Primary, children:
Demonstrate Honesty, showing integrity, responsibility and self‑awareness
Experience Enjoyment, approaching learning and relationships with positivity and confidence
Show Achievement, using taught strategies to manage challenges, set goals and believe in their potential
Act with Respect, valuing themselves and others, celebrating difference and contributing to a safe, inclusive community
Work with Teamwork, collaborating effectively, supporting others and contributing to school life
We measure impact through:
Pupil voice, showing that children feel safe, valued and confident discussing PSHE themes
Teacher assessment of knowledge, skills and personal development
Behaviour and attitudes across the school, including conduct, relationships and engagement
Safeguarding and wellbeing indicators
Participation in wider school life, leadership roles and community contribution
Ultimately, our PSHE curriculum ensures that pupils develop the character, emotional intelligence and social understanding needed to succeed. It supports them to become thoughtful, responsible and compassionate individuals who live out the values of Pomphlett Primary School.
